  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup shredded white Cheddar cheese (amount divided in recipe steps below)
  • 1/2 cup roasted, salted almonds (or flavored almonds), coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup plain panko
  • 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper

Step 1

Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a 12-inch ovenproof skillet over medium heat.  Add the broccoli and onion and cook for 6 minutes or until the onion is tender.

Step 2

Stir in the soup, milk and 1/2 cup cheese and heat to a boil.  Reduce the heat to medium-low.  Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the broccoli is tender, stirring occasionally.  While the broccoli is cooking, heat the broiler.

Step 3

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and stir in the chopped almonds,  panko and the remaining 1/4 cup cheese.  Stir the cracked black pepper into the broccoli mixture and season with salt.  Top with the almond mixture.

Step 4

Place the skillet into the oven and broil, 4 to 5 inches from the heat, for 1 minute or until the panko mixture is golden brown.  Let stand for 10 minutes before serving (mixture will be very hot).

    • You can substitute 16 ounces thawed frozen broccoli florets for the fresh broccoli, if desired.
